Taught by Professor Philip Walsh
The second semester of “Elementary Latin” will complete your introduction to the basic elements of the Latin language. It will emphasize the fundamentals of grammar, vocabulary, and reading comprehension – in other words, all of the tools necessary to develop a sound reading proficiency in Latin. Last semester, we began reading connected passages and short selections of unaltered Latin; this semester, these readings will become more prominent as our knowledge of Latin advances. You will not be expected to speak Latin, but you should have at this point a good classical pronunciation and know where to place important accents.
Nōn scholae, sed vītae discimus – We learn not for school, but for life!
Several practical advantages accrue from the study of classical languages. Introductory knowledge of Latin, for example, increases knowledge of English vocabulary and grammar, which is invaluable no matter what academic or professional field you pursue. Familiarity with Latin also facilitates the learning of the Romance languages, which are descended from it. Most importantly, however, the study of Latin reinforces the importance of close reading, patience, and intellectual discipline. You will learn to manage complexity, to persevere in the face of the unknown, and to love learning for its own sake.
Elementary Latin II will meet Tuesday and Friday (lectures) from 9:30 pm – 10:30 pm (UTC-5) and Monday and Wednesday from 7:30 pm – 8:30 pm (preceptor sessions – M.A. only)
