Curriculum

The core of the Signum Academy High School Literature Program is a four-course sequence, designed for grades 9-12. These courses provide an excellent preparation for college literature and writing, especially in conjunction with the Signum Academy Writing Tutorial Program.

2012-2013 Academic Year:  Now Enrolling

Brit Lit Splash ImageBritish Literature

This class is a one-year study of British literature, a look at some of the greatest works of literature from the early Middle Ages through the twentieth century. Students will be taking a smaller number of the most important and representative works of literature in various genres and studying them in detail, focusing on close and careful reading rather than merely attaining a superficial familiarity with these works.

Great Books Splash ImageGreat Books I: The Ancients

The “Great Books” are the most influential works of literature in our cultural heritage, that attempt to tackle life’s big questions: What does it mean to be a human being?  How should we live?  In this course, students will become acquainted with most of the major authors from the ancient world through A.D. 1300 and take them through important poems, plays, and prose works that have had an enormous impact on our culture.

2013-2014 Academic Year

The following courses are planned for the second half of the four course sequence and are slated to be offered during the 2013-2014 Academic Year.

  • American Literature
  • Great Books II: The Moderns

There is no very rigid sequence among these courses, though the Great Books courses are planned with 8th, 9th and 10th graders in mind, and the American and British Literature courses with 11th and 12th graders in mind.  Students are recommended to take Great Books I before Great Books II, but this is not absolutely required.  We recommend against the enrollment of students under the age of 13.

Coming Soon: The Signum Academy Language Program

Next academic year, we plan to offer not only a wider array of literature classes, but language classes as well.  Our first goal is to offer Latin classes for both high school ages and for younger students looking to jump-start their language acquisition with the bedrock linguistic fundamentals that Latin provides so well.  Stay tuned!
