Adult Level Study at the Signum Language Centre is a 3-course program that prepares the student for acquiring the Intermediate Level (B1 in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages), which is widely recognized as the level that guaranties the independence of the student when confronted with native speakers in an immersion context. The 3 courses are called Spanish A1, Spanish A, and Spanish B1 – or Beginner, Elementary and Intermediate.
Students are expected at the end of the program to know and use in context all the grammar points in Spanish: Spanish verbs will be thoroughly presented, as well as the noun and adjective system. All students will be able to engage in a fluent conversation with a native speaker on a variety of topics and in many contexts. A student will be able to write a composition on a topic of his or her choosing and also to read real Spanish texts and get a complete, general understanding of them.
In the future, the program will expand its scope to incorporate two more stages of the European framework which will bring the student to near-native level: B2 and C1. Additional courses that will be offered in parallel to the main program are Spanish Literature, Conversational Spanish and Spanish through Tolkien (this last in collaboration with the Mythgard Institute).
Courses Designed for the StudentAt the Signum Language Center, language courses are designed by taking into account the student’s needs. Flexibility, immersion, access to native professors and autonomous learning are the characteristics of the Spanish program, all balanced in each single course to provide the best learning environment a student can get.
At Signum University we are aware that students’ learning needs are becoming more particular and more varied. Time and place have become an important factor when deciding to engage in any kind of learning. Our online platform allows students to profit from the distinct advantages that technology brings to the study of languages and, at the same time, it delivers a learning environment that transforms the traditional language classroom but keeps its benefits. Thus, an ideal language course is brought to directly to the student, wherever they are – and at the time that is most convenient for them. Recorded lectures can be watched – and watched again in full or in part – at any moment during the student’s weekly schedule. Live preceptor sessions adapted to the student’s availability reproduce the classroom setting, maintaining the traditional relationship between the native-speaker lecturer and the student Sessions are limited to eight students, which means that the allotted time for each student to practice Spanish is even significantly increased from the traditional, in-school system.
The quickest way to learn a language is by constant exposure to it. The Spanish program at Signum University makes an effort to provide an immersive environment in which the student is persistently challenged in the target language. The recorded lectures are conducted in Spanish as well as the live preceptor sessions. The student, by exposure to the language and through applying his or her own skills in language learning, assimilates progressively the elements needed to become independent in any communications with native speakers.
Native-speaker Lecturers and Preceptors
The program offers also the possibility of having access to native-speaker lecturers and preceptors, each of whom will conduct their teaching in Spanish (subtitles in English or Spanish are provided at the lecturer’s discretion). Lecturers and preceptors will also teach the language alongside its – and their – culture and society.
Learning a language is also a process in which the student gets to know how best he or she may approach the act of language learning, which is a skill in itself. In the Spanish program, the student is challenged to engage in tasks, especially the production skills such as writing and talking, in which the student is confronted to learn on their own. This learning process strengthens the student’s approach to language learning and makes him or her aware of how to acquire more effectively the target language – and also how to assess his or her own progress. The preceptors will prompt the students to share their reflections about language learning and the Spanish language, which in turn will boost the student’s motivation to learn in the best way for them.
